WHY WE JOINED 1% FOR THE PLANET

We are excited to announce Louve Design has officially joined the 1% for the Planet global movement. Louve is committed to ensuring everything we do – from sourcing materials to creating the final product – is done so with environmental impact in mind. But as we all know, there is always more we can do when it comes to sustainability. Keeping our carbon impact low, using renewable & upcycled materials, and remaining fully transparent are among the best practices of conducting business — but we will not stop there. We have taken the necessary next step to offset our carbon emissions by pledging to donate to organizations who support our shared goal: to protect the planet, the people and the animals.

By offering 1% of our annual sales to not-for-profit organizations, Louve Design is coming together with thousands of members to protect the future of life on this planet.

What is 1% for the Planet?

The idea behind 1% for the Planet was simple – because companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should have a responsibility to protect those resources in return. This incredible organization brings dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving in a way that is directly rooted in the strengths of both sides.

1% for the Planet is comprised of close to 6,000 members who donate annually to 4,500 organizations operating in 91 countries. To date, 1% for the Planet has raised nearly three million dollars directly supporting climate and humanitarian issues such as food security, pollution, land, water and wildlife.

“Member companies become stronger as businesses by disciplining themselves in ways that enable them to meet that 1% for the Planet commitment” – Kate Williams, CEO, 1% for the Planet.

We all call planet earth our home and to continue to do so, we must ensure the consumption of our planet’s resources is simultaneously met with an environmental solution. 1% for the planet provides a way to do this and we are proud to be part of this growing network.

Pacific Wild

Through our involvement with 1% for the Planet, one of the non-profits we have chosen to support a remarkable organization in our own backyard: Pacific Wild. This not-for-profit is committed to protecting wildlife and their habitat in the Great Bear Rainforest through impactful communications, scientific research and community-led initiatives. Pacific Wild takes a multi-faceted approach to protect the Great Bear by focusing on these goals:

  1. Achieve organizational resilience and accountability
  2. Foster respectful relationships with Indigenous communities
  3. Protect Pacific Herring
  4. Monitor the salmon count
  5. Marine protected area planning
  6. Stop bottom-trawl fishing
  7. Save BC Wolves
  8. Coastal temperate old-growth forest protection
  9. Engage our diverse communities

"As a brand that calls BC our home, we must take action to protect this land and its wildlife for generations to come. The choice to support Pacific Wild was an easy one, but also a decision that was not taken lightly. Pacific Wild uses authentic storytelling, evidence-based reporting and wildlife monitoring to promote legal action, influence policy and educate Canadians, within BC and beyond, about why this all matters and how our individual choices can make a difference."

Fashion Takes Action

As a sustainable fashion retailer, Louve Design is also committed to ensuring the fashion industry as a whole does better for the people, planet and animals which is why we have chosen to donate to Fashion Takes Action (FTA). We support this non-profit organization that aims to advance sustainability in the fashion industry through education, awareness, research and collaboration. There are many issues we too frequently see within the fashion industry and Fashion Takes Action takes a stand on these key areas that desperately need to change:

  • The use of pesticides and fertilizers to grow cotton
  • The highly toxic chemicals used to process and treat fabric
  • Sweatshops and unfair labour practices
  • Enormous amounts of water required to make clothing
  • The unethical disposal of contaminated water
  • The fast-fashion frenzy that is contributing to the growing number of textiles which end up in landfill each year.

"At Louve Design, we have been committed to sustainable and ethical practices since the very beginning, but there is always room to do better. A large part of doing better is first knowing how to do better. Fashion Takes Actions collaborates with hundreds of apparel businesses, entrepreneurs, academics, NGOs and industry stakeholders to present actionable information and resources needed to make informed decisions. To truly make a difference, we all have a part to play and we are proud to offer our support."
